When your friendly neighbourhood Office Supply  company calls and asks if you need any thing – how many of you have checked the stationery cupboard. Not many I bet. I have seen many cupboards with boxes of pens, brightly coloured markers still in their packets, and enough paper to decorate the Great Wall of China ! Joking aside it is work keeping a stock list of what you have. Office Supplies are a cost to a business that can get out of hand.

It is important because items get lost or damaged and some items do have a use by date. I think people are scared of running out – it is that just in case mentality that folk have. The easiest way to solve this is to tidy the cupboard up first. Make sure that every is visible and not  tucked away behind anything. Then, when someone asks for another notepad or a pen, go and check first yourself. Don’t let people help themselves, you need to keep control. As soon as you see that you are down to the last three pads or whatever, put in another order with your Office Supplies company . That makes sure that you don’t run out and that you are not over ordering.

Encourage staff to keep a tidy desk.
