Generators: Because Load Shedding Is Here to Stay

South Africans should prepare for “years of gloom,” according to a report in the Sunday Times. While this is a gloomy take on the current electricity problem, there is no use in trying to sugar coat what South Africa is facing. The report goes on to say that Eskom’s load shedding and financial woes “could drag the country into a death spiral”. While citizens can stockpile torches and candles to get through dark evenings, businesses will need to be more proactive if they are to weather the storm of sporadic electricity supply, which is why it makes sense to invest in generators.

Eskom will need to spend billions on maintenance in 2019 just to maintain the infrastructure it already has. In what might be some light at the end of the tunnel, the utility provider has promised that load shedding should subside by March. However, the report quotes energy analyst Ted Blom, who remains adamant that coal shortages will persist come 2025. The report goes on to state that, “About 80% of Eskom power generation relies on coal.”

The utility provider’s been described as being at a “coal cliff,” with there simply being too few coal mines available to supply its needs. New mines, however, will take years to develop. With coal shortages, more load shedding is a guarantee in future. While it is more than a mere inconvenience for people who want to go about living their daily lives, it can be the kiss of death for businesses and the South African economy if not managed well. What do businesses have available in defence of the devastation that load shedding can bring?

Why Investing in Generators Is the Way Forward

The very nature of load shedding is sporadic and irregular. You cannot predict it, but your business can prepare for it. Businesses of all shapes and sizes, and from across the economic spectrum benefit from backup generators. There are many businesses across the economy that are at particular risk of safety, health, and quality standards if sufficient precautions are not taken to prepare for load shedding and power outages. Backup generators help ensure systems remain powered during unplanned power cuts or during load shedding.

Generators range wildly in terms of capacity and size, and they are used across multiple sectors. Just imagine the losses that will be incurred if a major food processing plant had to suddenly close their doors in the midst of production. Aside from the losses and risks associated with spoilage, where equipment is shut down mid-operation and without warning, employees can be in danger too. Then the costs factor comes into play, with millions being potentially lost, job security eviscerated, and large-scale manufacturing factories shutting down.

By these standards, it becomes clear how generators can add value to any South African business, regardless of size or scope. These generators are able to power small to medium-sized enterprises, and even larger premises and buildings. Avoid the potential for devastating loss of revenue, and never be left in the dark again. Invest in a backup generator that will help you keep the lights on and your customers satisfied even in the face of unreliable electricity supply.
