There is More to Your Printer’s Ink Cartridge than Meets the Eye
It might seem like a humble invention but don’t be fooled. Though small and mostly hidden inside theprinter, without it installed and properly working, it is not possible to get the images and text from mobile and computer devices to paper. We share a few facts about printer’s ink and toner cartridges, giving insight as to why they can be considered one of the most amazing inventions of the last century.
A Staggering Number of Printer Cartridges Are Used Annually
More than a billion units of ink are used annually. Home users, retailers, education facilities, hospitals, and corporate users need to print daily.
Many Cartridges Are Thrown Away
As many as eight units are thrown away per second in the USA alone. It means many more units make their way to the landfills of the world daily. Recyclingprinter consumables helps minimise the environmental impact of printing. Also, printing in draft or economy mode helps to reduce ink usage, while sending print jobs to PDF or other output formats for digital storage or sharing helps to get more prints per unit. This also translates into less waste.
Not Biodegradable
Printer cartridges are not biodegradable and can take up to 1000 years to decompose. As such, it makes sense to recycle them. Many manufacturers have recycling programmes. Rather opt to have units recycled than to throw them out.
The Oil Price Affects the Cost of Printer Cartridges
Because the units are made from plastic derived from oil or petroleum, the cost of manufacturing new ones is affected by the oil price.
Manufacturers Use Recycled Units to Lower Costs
Most well-known brands of printing equipment use most of the recycled units and only replace some of their parts. This helps them to reduce their environmental footprints and keep the units affordable for end users. The units can be recycled several times before having to be discarded.
Infrequent Use Can Lead to Ink Heads Drying Out
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that if you don’t use itoften, you will save ink. Infrequent usage leads to drying of the ink heads. To minimise the risk, run regular print tests to prevent clogging or drying out of the ink heads.
Not All Fonts Are Economical
Just as some vehicles use more fuel per kilometre than others, so do fonts differ in the ink required for printing them. Economical fonts include Times Roman and Courier, whereas Arial is a heavier ink user. Set the company policy to use one of the economical fonts for documents that must be published or printed.
Ink Is Expensive
People often don’t realise how expensive the ink-making process is. With the ink being more expensive than blood, drop for drop, it makes sense to use the Print Preview setting for reviewing layouts first, rather than printing them and only then checking them for errors.
Ink Is Not A New Invention
The Chinese culture goes back a very long way. With their written language dating back 4500 years, one can imagine how old the invention of ink really is. They originally used ink derived from fish glue while the Indians originally used ink made from a combination of tar and bones.
Certain Industries Use More Ink Than Others
Printing shops use several printer cartridges a month but law firms are also known for being heavy ink users. The medical and accounting industries are also among the largest users of ink. Companies operating in the technology and computer sectors use less ink.
Japan Is Home to Many Top Printer Cartridge Manufacturers
Canon, Brother, Rico, Panasonic, Sharp, and OKI are Japanese, while Samsung has its head office in South Korea. HP and Lexmark have their head offices in the USA.
Printer Cartridges Are Categorised
Original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) cartridges are the units made by the specific brand, such as HP or Canon. Generic units are cartridges made to be compatible with the OEM types. Remanufactured units come from the original manufacturer and have been recycled and refurbished or remanufactured. Refilled units have not been refurbished and no components have been replaced. The units are simply refilled with ink.
We supply cartridges for all major makes and models of printers at exceptionally affordable prices.
