From Metal Printing to the Modern Printer Cartridge

Long before the use of the modern ink or toner printer cartridges, printing was already a technology in use for printing books and other publications. The seemingly humble printer cartridge, however, revolutionised the way printing devices work, enabling the accurate and fast printing that is possible today.

Though people generally know that the first print press was the brainchild of Johannes Gutenberg, not many are aware of the fact that the first type of printing device was already invented a thousand years before AD. Indeed, the first movable printing device was made in ancient China. The Koreans later improved on the design, enabling the printing of the oldest metal printed book. Just imagine the complexity of that printing process.

The first book of significance printed from a print press in the West was the Mazarin or Gutenberg Bible. With just over 47 copies of the particular Bible still in existence, one has to commend the print process used. Many types of print presses have been designed since then, but it was only in the 19th century when the first inkjet technology made its appearance.

Canon, a well-known printer manufacturer, engineered the first inkjet printers in the late fifties. It also marked the introduction of the inkjet printer cartridges now so widely used that people hardly think of the innovation that goes into the making of these devices.

With more than a billion inkjet printer cartridges used globally every year, one cannot imagine a world without printing. However, printing also leaves its mark on the environment. Fortunately, most manufacturers recognise the importance of environmentally sustainable practices. To this end, these manufacturers have recycling plans in place to reduce the number of cartridges ending up on landfills. For the largest part, the manufacturers re-use parts of the cartridges. This helps to reduce the cost of printing consumables as well.

Inkjet printer cartridges use a thermal system to heat up the liquid and spray such onto the print surface. This is also the major difference between toner and ink cartridges. Toner is a powder substance that contains dye-based pigments and wax or polymer. The toner is fused into the print surface, whereas with inkjet technology, the liquid is sprayed through nozzles onto the print surface.

Inkjet provides for superb image quality, whereas laser technology is perfect for large volume and cost-effective printing. As such, both types are relevant in the world of printing.

Though many people know that printer cartridges can be recycled, few are dimly aware of the fact that the units can be recycled several times. Indeed, it is estimated that the units can be recycled as many as seven times before finally finding their way into the world of waste.

You can also do your part to reduce the landfill by setting policies for print at your firm. Rather than allowing employees to print out documents for proofing, let them make use of the print preview settings. Also select a default font for in-house printing that is not as ink or toner heavy as Arial. Times Roman and Calibri use less ink and thereby help to keep your printing costs in the affordable range.

Partner with a firm that can provide software with the leased devices that allow for print consumables monitoring. In this way, you can identify early on when consumables must be ordered. You can also control the usage levels for each of the devices to reduce the misuse of company resources.

Make use of ink-saving modes for in-house prints. Do you really need crisp and clear print copies of all in-house documents or can your employees work with the draft or economy mode for such?

Regular printer cleaning and servicing also help to make the printing devices more efficient. Dirty print-heads can cause streaks on pages. With such, employees have to reprint documents, leading to more ink or toner usage and paper wastage.

Ask employees to use bold only when necessary as it uses far more ink than normal font displays. Print in colour only when the documents are for publishing or client view.

Email rather than print. Fortunately, when renting one of our multifunctional printers, you have several output and storage options, helping to reduce the need for printing to paper.

The best way to save on the cost of printer cartridges is to buy your consumables from us. We offer complete print management solutions to help your firm get the most prints, best quality, and access to superior printing devices.
