Although toner cartridges are widely used in office, commercial, and home print applications, few people ever think about the origin, make-up, and characteristics of toner and ink cartridges.

What Is It?

It is a pigment dye-based powder. The pigments are what cause the particular colour that is printed. Black, yellow, magenta, and cyan are the most widely used pigments. Combinations of these pigments create specific colours. Nowadays, white and clear pigments are also available for toner cartridges. The powder consists of the pigments and extremely fine plastic, making it possible for the mixture to melt as it goes through a fuse system. The fuse system heats up the mixture to be burned into the paper surface. The mixture is thus fused with the surface, allowing for bright and clear imaging on paper.

Not A Recent Invention

Some technologies have been around for many decades but have not reached their full potential until recently. Toner is such a technology. Electro-photography is more than 90 years old. This technology is considered an ancestor of the laser printers and thus toner cartridges. The first print of the kind was made during the late thirties in the previous century. It had taken a decade before it became a commercial technology. The latest advances in technology have made it possible for well-known printer manufacturers to produce print devices that print exceptionally fast and at cost-effective rates.

Original Toner

The original substance consisted of carbon powder. It was a bit on the messy side, especially during cartridge replacements. Fortunately, the addition of polymer or wax to the powder has taken care of the messiness. With it also came more clarity in print. The main difference between toner and ink cartridges is that the latter is made in liquid form and sprayed onto the print surface, whereas the former is made from a powder mix and fused into the surface.

Two Ways of Making the Powder

The first method entails grounding whereby the particles are compounded and pulverised to create the powder substance. With this method, different shapes and sizes of particles lead to inconsistencies in print. The next method entails a chemical production whereby the particles are made through a chemical process. This allows for improved consistency in shape and size. The result is superb print clarity and reduced powder usage. It also helps to reduce the energy required to fuse the particles with the print surface.
