An interesting question if you own a printer or your company owns large numbers of printers.

Print can be an expensive commodity, especially as paper prices are going up quicker than ever. Most months now there is a announcement from merchants to say that there will be another increase. So most printers come with some cartridges already installed.

The brand of these print products  is the same as the printer, but they are not full. They are known as ” get me home ” cartridges, just enough for you to try the printer out and make sure it is working properly and there is usually enough for you to print a couple of hundred pages.

So lets start with original toner/cartridges.

When it comes to OEM which stands for original equipment manufacturer,  these are the actual toner cartridges that have been made by the brand printer you have such as  Canon, Brother, Lexmark, Dell, Epson, HP, Samsung and there are many more brands as well. The OEM cartridges will be the ones manufactured by the company printer you have. So all pretty straight forward.

Next come compatible toner/cartridges.

When talking about compatible cartridges, it means that they will match with or be compatible with your printer. The only difference will be that it’s been manufactured by another company – not your printer’s. Termed as the “generic” brand of printer cartridge, it is often given the blame if your printer is malfunctioning. Nothing could be further from the truth –  manufacturers have a high quality standard and produce these products under strict code and quality control. These cartridges are brand new and have never been used. The main benefit is the price…. they can be up to 50% cheaper or more than an original brand.

Finally come  the re-manufactured toner/cartridges.

Another area where you can save some money is with a re manufactured toner cartridge. Essentially these been re-built  to be used again. Recycled cartridges if you will.

The process to produce these products includes certified technicians gathering them, cleaning them out, replacing all the bad parts and refilling them with semantic toner. Once that’s done, it’s tested and resold to the public. Not only will this be savings for you and your business, but it will also help the environment! With landfills and rubbish tips  filling up with empty toner and ink cartridges, it’s an easy and cost effective way for your company to be seen as Eco-friendly.

So there you have it – a basic and simple explanation about the sometimes complicated world of cartridges and toners. Don’t even get me started on drums which will be for another time.
